GLOBALSTAR(r) EXPANDS N AMERICA COVERAGE Globalstar has increased their coverage in North America to include Alaska, the Western Atlantic, and the Gulf of Mexico. Please check the coverage map at www.skyhelp.net/globalstar.htm for you next trip. The Globalstar gateway in Puerto Rico will be opening in August will extend US domestic rates throughout the Caribbean and most of the Mid-Atlantic. GLOBALSTAR(r) MARINE KIT The Globalstar Marine kit is now available. It is similar to the auto kit, which provides an external antenna, higher power output, and an optional headset/handset. However they have adapted it for marine used with protection against the harsh environment. GLOBALSTAR(r) DEMOS 200kbps DATA SERVICE Globalstar has demonstrated a 200kbps, yes that was 200kbps, data service that is intended as a passenger service in airlines. This should be better than anything presently available. Although no service date is planned yet, it does show that the is a great potential for high speed service from LEO satellites. Standard 9600bps data service from the telephone handset is scheduled to begin in October. REPORTS DISCOVER SATELLITE TELEPHONES In a typical news "happening" everyone is on their cell phone clogging up the available local cell channels. Call blocking is common on all cellular systems as anyone trying to make a call during rush hour will attest. The people waiting to make calls include the news reporters who must wait to file a story. Now with a satellite telephone, reporters can skip the blocked local phone service via satellite. Satellite telephone also works for emergency workers and others who have to make important coordination calls. IRIDIUM STILL IN COURT Wireless Week (10 July 2000)- Castle Harlan Inc. is closing on a $50M deal to take over Iridium. The deal must still be approved by the court, the hearing is schedule for 19 July. It looks like the will have a scaled back operation with only three gateways; the government site, one in the US and one in Europe. GLOBALSTAR(r) TESTING Bermuda Trials- Several people have taken PSN rental units to the Bermuda islands with excellent results. Artic Circle Tests- A unit sent above the Arctic circle in north east Canada did not work, as was expected. This was outside the coverage area so we thought it would fail, but we had to try it. Another test will be below the Artic Circle this month, this test is expected to work. RV Test -- I visited a Recreation Vehicle center last week to see how the Globalstar(r) unit would work inside an RV. It worked well. Of course, it will not work inside a metal enclosure, but since today's RVs are made of fibreglass I was able to get a good signal in most interior areas, including the bathroom. This is good news for RV folks traveling in areas not covered by cellular service. The fibreglass roof test results should apply to sailboats, too. |
