GSC-100 STATUS Production of the GSC-100 units is in progress; however, it will be mid-November before my first installment arrives. When the instruments do arrive, I will send out an e-mail in the time-order of the Pioneer subscribers. You can then submit an order through the on-line web catalog, fax or e- mail. Your instrument will be tested and ready to use when you receive it. GSC-100 SCREENS ON THE WEB You can see what some of the screens on the GSC-100 look like on our web site. We have pictures of GPS functions and ORBCOMM function screens, especially the "Satellite Pass" screen. There is not a lot of descriptive text yet, but the screens are there and I will add more information when my manuals from Magellan arrive. ANTARCTIC ADVENTURE Our scientists are getting ready to leave soon. They will be taking a Stellar EL2000G unit and testing our new antenna. We have a web page dedicated to their mission and to their efforts with communications. Since they are out-of-range of any gateway earth station, Globalgrams (datagrams) will be used exclusively. NEW SERVICE FEATURES UNDER TEST In addition to e-mail, TTY and fax services, PSN is testing Peek+(tm). This advanced e-mail service will allow you to examine, download, forward and delete e-mail from any POP mail system. This will greatly enhance a subscriber's ability to keep up with multiple e-mail accounts remotely using the satellite unit. Now you don't even have to tell anyone where you are, just check your mail from anywhere. TTY TESTING CONTINUES We got some good testing in with real people this week, and squashed a couple of "bugs" in the process. Although the e-mail-to-TTY service is one-way now, it will eventually provide two-way messaging. It's just a matter of time--and money. NEW ANTENNA UNDER TEST The link budgets for narrow-band satcom systems are marginal at best. You can see the link budget on the PSN engineering page. It is important that we use the best antennas affordable to get the best signal. Poor link margin mean lots of error packets and wasted bandwidth. We are looking at an RHCP antenna for fixed wireless operations and it appears very promising. It will boost the link margin up to 6 dBi and still cost only about $100. This will be very beneficial in third world countries where money and bandwidth are scarce. 16 SATELLITES WORKING The following satellites have been commissioned for service(*): A1, A2, A4, A5, A6, A8, F2, G1, G2, B2, B3, B4, B5, B6, B7, B8. We can expect the C plane to start being commissioned soon.
