INMARSAT Introduces the M64 The INMARSAT 64 kbps notebook size unit is due for release soon. Due this month, the M64 unit will be about the size of notebook computer, weigh about 9 pounds, give 64 kbps satellite connectivity, and connect to your PC with a USB connection. Stand by for more details. Self-Lauding I won the 1999 IEEE Professional Achievement Award and will be in Dallas Labor Day weekend to receive it at the annual IEEE conference for Professional Development. It is a national level award. My thanks to Ron Aasen, the IEEE National Capital Area Chairman for nominating me. Iridium 9570 Docking Stations Ready The docking station for the Motorola 9500 Iridium satellite telephone is in stock and ready for shipment. The docking station allows the 9500 unit to be used like a desk phone, which includes speaker phone, battery charg er, and data port. The 9570 connects to an external antenna with a TNC connector. Long Distance Usuary Rates Long Distance companies (mine is Sprint) are charging outrageous fees for connections to the Iridium system (country code 881). I am being charged $6.50 per minute for calls just to check to see if a phone is working, th e Iridium charge on the call is only $1.79 per minute for the North America to North America call. I have found the long distance companies have been charging these usuary fees for satellite calls for years, just because they can. The fees are based on tariffs worked out years ago and they are not lowered and the usage rates go down, guess who's keeping the difference. Some journalist should call them to task about this. AMSC Satphone Sales Extended Stratos has extended their sale price of $999 for the KVH K3 and K2 units. See the web site for details on the equipment and sale terms. Save $100 on an Iridium External Antenna PSN has found a non-oem source for the external Iridium mast mount antenna and will offer them at only $175, that's $100 less than the OEM brand. Add the saving of making your own external antenna cable from commonly ava ilable LMR-400 coax (at about $50) and the Iridium unit is very affordable as a satellite phone inside your home, camp or business. Insure your satcom equipment PSN offers insurance on you satellite equipment whether purchased here or elsewhere. Connection Protection (tm) give protection against accidental theft or damage, saving you the trouble of putting in a claim through your business or private insure, that usually has a large deductible and will then raises your rates. CM deductible is low and replaces your unit fast. See the web page for details. |
