9505 Software Upgrades

Iridium Data Tests 

Our first Iridium data tests went well. We used the Iridium Direct mode, where Iridium acts as the Internet service provider (ISP). I was able to receive several e-mails with no problem. Boat Race Satellite Tracking 

PSN is preparing ten satellite-tracking units for boat races. These units will have a Sat-Trac web page for real-time tracking of the race. At the end of the race a file of all position reports will be available. The first race we will track will be on the Great Lakes-the 2001 Bacardi Bayview Mackinac Island Yacht Race.

StratosConnect Service 

Stratos is now offering a dial-up service to access Iridium, Inmarsat and MSAT mobile telephones at a discount compared to standard telephone companies. The discount is relative, but the long distance companies are really overcharging their customers on this one. You can also call your Iridium pager voicemail with this service, too. The 1-888-626-9696 number can be accessed from anywhere in the US and Canada, and elsewhere can be called with +1-718-269-0678. Compare these prices: 
MCI charge to 8816 = $4.50 surcharge plus $7.33/minute 
Sprint to 8816 = $6.50/minute

Motent (AMSC) Terminal Pricing 

The OmniQuest Transportable MT ST-251 is now only $1795. This is the laptop size unit used with the former AMSC-and now Motent- satellite system. Calls are only $1.19/minute with a $45/month access fee.

Iridium Call Forward Alert 

Iridium units come with "No Answer-Call Forward" set to ON. This means even though there is no forwarding number assigned, a voice will answer when the handset does not answer a call, and the caller will be charged for the call. See Page 100 in the Iridium manual. To turn this feature off, the unit must be logged on the network to change this option: Menu -> Call Related Features -> Cancel All Forwarding -> select YES

I was corrected when stating the number of Inmarsat Mini-M users. There are now 85,000 units active today!
