IRIDIUM CALL CAPACITY A few folks have had questions on the Iridium system call capacity, especially for their Y2K plans. There is not much to worry about. Some rough figures show that each satellite can handle thousands of simultanous calls , remember they are only (2400 bps each) and should any one ground satation be saturated, they can route calls to another ground station through inter-satellite links. INMARSAT M4 INFO The INMARSAT M4 satellite terminal, which is capable of both 4.8 and 64 kbps data rates should be ready in December. The PSN web site has the informations sheets on coverage, cost and operation of the M4 unit available f rom Nera. PSN to Antarctia Again Be sure to follow the adventures of Dr Vernon Asper as he travels to Antarctia again to recover the marine samples he set out last year. Dr Asper will have an Iridium phone and data adapter to keep us posted with email a nd pictures of the trip. He leaves in December, stay tuned for more news. Free Iridium Paging Someone wanting to leave a numeric or voice page for you on your Iridium phone can call toll free 1 888 588 2456 in the US and Canada. The page will the appear on your phone or pager in a couple minutes, if its on. You can then here your voice mail toll free on your Iridium phone by dialing +1-888-588-2456. Y2K Phones Order your Y2K phones early, remember they will be rented out on a first come, first served bases. You also want to allow sufficent time for internal shipping, installation and training. ORBCOMM Roaming Orbcomm has begin a roaming service for its users, however, presently it is not seamless. What you do is register at each Orbcomm gateway station that you intend on traveling to and you are given a unique adress on each gateway that looks like your orginal one, but with at new gateways location. You must also program in the new gateway to your satellite terminal, those gateways are: US-001 Europe-120 Malaysia-121 Brazil-123 Japan-130 New Iridium Rates The new Iridium Rate Plan replacing the Standby Plan for new customers is called the Low-Usage Plan. It has a $99.95 activation fee but only a $19.95 month service charge. Follow-Me paging is not available with this pla n and the usage rates are higher than the Frequent user plan.
