Globalstar Data Testing PSN is testing data over both the Qualcomm 1600 satellite telephone and the 1620 stand-alone packet modem. We now have one data telephone and three GSP1620 packet modems. The unit uses a PPP interface that is available for Windows, Mac, Palm and Unix operating systems so it should be very versatile in terms of the applications it can support. The data cables for the Globalstar telephones are on order now. I am testing the phone unit and it works well. Dial-Up Networking for Windows with Globalstar is as fast as a LAN in getting a connection to my e-mail server over the Internet. Short e-mails were uploaded or downloaded very fast, but the connection speed of 9600 bps showed when uploading large transmissions--an e-mail with a 85Kb attachment took the expected +70 seconds to transmit. Baha Racing with PSN We supported several racing teams during this year's Baha 2000 Race. These are intense races across remote areas where good communications are critical--and scarce. Satellite communications allowed the race teams to coordinate activities over hundreds of miles of desert. One racer credits satellite communications with his third place win. Globalstar Puerto Rico Gateway Opens On 28 November, Globalstar announced the opening of the gateway in Puerto Rico. This will allow Globalstar USA subscribers to place "local" calls throughout the Caribbean. Iridium has been Sold Iridium LLC has been bought by a new company: Iridium Satellite LLC. They expect to offer commercial service again in 60 days. Carib1500 Sails With PSN Steve Black, the organizer of the Carib1500 sail rally, is sold on PSN satellite service.
