DataStorm™

PSN is a dealer and CERTIFED INSTALLER for the DataStorm™ Ku-band satellite terminal by MotoSat Inc. We completed our first install on a RV. This was a pure satellite installation where we used a Globalstar™ phone to complete the on-line registration before the unit becomes operational. That should be a first. The installation went very well and before and after photos can be seen on the website. The DataStorm™ unit provides full period service with a maximum down load speeds of 400 to 1000kbps and upload speeds of 30 to 90 kbps. Engenius™ 4 phone base station

Engenius™ has released their 4 analog telephone base station unit. The base station can register up to 36 two-way handsets that provide handset-to-handset or handset-to-base station communications for up to 5 miles.

Globalstar™ Funding

Globalstar was to receive up to $55M funding from a private investor to aid them out of bankruptcy. With over 70,000 subscribers it looks like they may be profitable this year. However, the FCC has ruled that the satellite companies may use part of their spectrum to offer cellular service to augment their satellite coverage. Globalstar is now valued differently and has backed out of the deal.

Iridium Captain Cards Available

Iridium now has Captain (SIM) Cards, these cards allow the phone to be used with Crew Card that have 20 minutes on them and sell for $30 ($1.50/min). Crew cards are used so the Captain does not have to keep track of crew calls. The Crew cards are good for one-year from the first call and can not be recharged. The Captain Card is billed as a regular basic Iridium account and can also access the Iridium data service.

$750 Trade-in on Globalstar Phones

Iridium is offering a $750 valued pre-paid SIM card for the trade-in of a Globalstar phone with the purchase of a new Motorola 9505 phone. Call for details, offer expires 31 March 2003.

Iridium to increase Monthly fee $8

Effective 1 January 2003, the monthly fee on all post-paid Iridium service plans will be increased $8 (for example, the basic plan fee increases from $19.95 to $27.95).

Globalstar Car Kit

We will be offering a new Globalstar Car Kit, priced at $399. The units are due in mid-March. The unit will offer extended antenna cables for use inside buildings and it has a very small external antenna. The Globalstar phone will require a modification that is included in the price. Details will follow as we test a demo unit.

Globalstar Battery Test

We have a simple battery test for battery charging capacity. For a Globalstar battery you should have 8 hours of standby power. So fully charge the battery, and then leave it on standby for 2 hours. If the battery meter shows 3/4ths, the battery can hold a full charge. Any less, ½ or ¼ means the capacity is reduced and you should plan on getting a new battery.
