MESSAGE SWITCH OUTAGE - My message switch was down after I crashed my system trying to upgrade the software. Those sirens of better software get me every time. That is why you got a new notice that you were being added to a mailing list you though you were already on. If you sent me mail, and it got kicked back, please send it again. SATELLITE LAUNCH - Keep an eye on the news. The launch of a Pegasus rocket with eight Orbcomm satellites is due soon. The satellites will be brought on-line in the spring of 1998, and are the first of three such launches planned for 1998. This should start bringing satellite communications--especially "personal" satellite communications--to the attention of the media. COMMUNICATIONS UPGRADE - The upgrade to ISDN service continues. The service goes in on the 12th and the ISDN router is in the shop getting upgraded now. Presently, I'm using a software router in NT called Routing ad RAS. It works, but dialing out is slow mostly because of the time needed to dial and log-in with a regular phone. The ISDN service should be able to dial and log-in in about a second. We'll see after it gets installed next week. DELAYING SBIR APPLICATIONS - After taking with other grant team members, it was decided to wait till March to input another set of SBIR grants to NIH and Department of Education. Trying to hurry an application for the December deadline at NIH would not have been fruitful. Also, the news of the satellite launches in the spring will boost the credibility of the PSN as a viable high tech service. We also need to get letters of support for [from??] several organizations, which will also take time. NEW PERSONAL SATELLITE STATION DESIGN - The new design for the Personal Satellite Station will go into testing soon. It will have a better power supply design, a "low battery" light and A more compact design. It truly will be a satellite terminal in a lunch-box ready to connect to a PC.
