ORBCOMM LAUNCHES EIGHT SATELLITES - On 23 December ORBCOMM launched eight satellites into orbit. These new satellites will come into service during the first quarter of 1998, extending satellite coverage in the US from about 1.5 hours per day to about 12 hours per day. With two additional launches scheduled for 1998, satellite coverage will in- crease to over 23 hours per day by the first quarter of 1999. I got to watch the launch via satellite. It was very exciting to witness a piece of space and telecommunications history being made.

ISDN ROUTER INSTALLED - On 19 December our Ascend Pipeline 75 was installed at PSN. This router reduces our Internet access time to just a couple of seconds, and eliminates errors. The rapid link-up speed allows faster polling for message traffic and information requests. We can also add more computers to perform a variety of functions, to include Internet access, by just adding them to the LAN.

SOFTWARE.COM SUPPORT - Software.com, Inc., the makers of "Post.Office," a market leader in Internet messaging software, will support PSN start-up operations with a 100-user license. PSN has been testing several popular e-mail messaging products, but "Post.Office" has been, by far, the easiest to install and use. We have been running their demo product for months now with no problems. Our thanks to Robert Martin, VP Marketing at Software.com, for making sure our worldwide satellite access system has, at the heart of its messaging operation, the finest Internet messaging software available.

WIRELESS RS-232 TESTED - Over the holidays we took the wireless RS-232 out for some real distance testing. Our test configuration included a satellite station and wireless RS-232 with antennas on my truck communicating with a PC and wireless RS-232 with an internal antenna. After several tests in our neighborhood, we were able to successfully operate the system with the satellite station and PC separated more than 900 feet. We then went out to the airport (level ground and fewer obstructions) and were able to keep a signal to about 1500 feet. The wireless RS-232 units will be useful when you wish to mount a satellite station in a vehicle or other optimal position while locating the PC--and yourself--in a more comfortable work environment. Because the satellite station stores both incoming and outgoing e-mail, you only have to poll it periodically.
