GLOBALGRAM TEST We had a bust on this one. A friend of mine took a satellite terminal to Hawaii and set it up in his room with a window antenna. We then both tried exchanging messages as "globalgrams" (store and forward messages). After two weeks of trying, we weren't able to pass any messages. There are several possible reasons the system didn't work as we expected: an internal setting was not correct for "globalgrams" in the satellite terminal, the antenna was in a very bad place, external noise blocked the satellite signal, there were bugs in the messaging software or the messages were incorrectly addressed. We know the satellite terminal was working in the normal mode with the window antenna before leaving the states. We will certainly continue working to figure out how to do "globalgrams." Both ORBCOMM and Panasonic have assigned engineers to work with us. WIRELESS RS-232 A great option for the Personal Satellite Station is the wireless RS-232. I have a pair of radio modems that have worked great over the last few weeks. The wireless connection allows you to leave the satellite terminal in the car, in an attic, or other good position where it can see the sky and communicate with the satellite freely. It holds any mail in its memory till you ask for it. You can then take your wireless terminal and PC and go a long way (hundreds to thousands of feet) away to a comfortable spot and check your mail when you want to. It works great! Now I can leave the satellite terminal in a place where it works the best, and I can go to a place where I work the best. ANGEL INVESTORS The PSN company's business plan was selected for circulation among the angel investors of two local groups: the Century Club and the Private Investors Network. We will be hearing soon if PSN will be given an opportunity to make a 10-minute presentation before either group. Hopefully the ORBCOMM satellite launch will occur at the same time to add to the excitement. UPGRADING TELEPHONE SERVICE After attending a local seminar about telecommunication opportunities presented by Ascend, we got the door prize. Actually, the guy who won the prize gave it to me after I asked to buy it from him. It was an Ascend Pipeline 50 ISDN router. So it looks like we will be upgrading the telecommunications ahead of schedule. The Pipeline router does on-demand hook-ups to the Internet from a LAN. ISDN gives a 200 ms call connect time. After a programmed amount of inactivity (a few seconds), it cuts the call. It will be much faster and better than the present dial-up connections we have now. MAGELLAN PRICES GSC-100 Magellan has announced the prices for their handheld satellite terminal, the GSC-100. It has a suggested retail price of $1999! Expect a "street" price of about $1550.
