GSC-100 SHIPPING Magellan began shipping the GSC-100 hand-held satcom units on August 25. PSN is about two weeks down on the shipping list, so mid-September looks like the next target date. The subscriber and equipment accounting software is installed, so all I have to do is learn how to use it. When you get your unit from PSN it will be activated and ready to go right out of the box. SATCOM-TTY INTERFACE WORKING We have successfully passed a dozen messages from a PSN satcom terminal to a TTY telephone. This service is a primary objective of the PSN service offering. The service will attempt to deliver the message three times at fifteen minute intervals before it considers the telephone call "not answered." The sender will receive a reply message indicating whether or not the TTY message was successfully transmitted. Duartek, Inc. in Fairfax, VA, will be assisting PSN in marketing this service to the speech- and hearing-impaired. NEW WEB SITE IS UP We have switched both internet provider and web host. Our new ISP is UUNet, the company that provides connection service to many other ISPs. With UUnet we have moved closer to the internet backbone, reducing the chance of failure between PSN and the internet. Our web site has also been re-hosted and includes a product catalog. Originally, I though these would be simple changes taking, at most, a few days. In reality it took three weeks to get all the details worked out! The on-line shopping basket is loaded and should be ready in a week or so. You will be able to do secure ordering right off the internet. INVENTORY AND ACCOUNTING SOFTWARE IS WORKING We have chosen Commware for our inventory and accounting software. It does both those things plus credit card transactions. So far so good on entering my inventory and customers. I'm looking forward to a populated data base soon. LATEST SATELLITE ELEMENTS In order to ensure our subscriber have the latest set of elements for their prediction programs we have established an auto-reply address of "elements@skyhelp.net." This address will reply with a text file containing the elements from the ORBCOMM constellation. I have found these to be a bit better that the standard elements because the satellite names are shorter and fit more easily the computer screen. My favorite program is OrbView from www.nlsa.com.
