End of R-BGAN Service on the Thuraya Satellite

The R-BGAN service will cease over the Thuraya satellite at 1800 UTC on Sunday 31 July 2005.

This means that from 31 July onwards users who have not yet migrated onto the Inmarsat-4 satellite will no longer be able to access the R-BGAN service. If you are in a remote location and do not have the required software upgrade, you will no longer be able to download the software, and will therefore suffer a complete loss of service.

The migration is a three-step process:

1. Download and install the new software (available from regionalbgan.inmarsat.com/upgrade along with further details )
2. Turn the polarity switch on the R-BGAN antenna to 'R'
3. Re-point the antenna.

The solution brings you the advantage of an "Always On" connection, you never have to log off because the terminal is a true IP solution so you only pay for the data you send and receive, not for the amount of time you are connected. Utilizing the New Inmarsat I4 satellite footprint, RBGAN covers up to 99 countries across Europe, the Middle East, the Indian sub-continent and North, Central and West Africa.

The ideal applications to use with this solution are:

bullet Email - keep in touch with the office, or family & friends.
bullet Internet - remote learning, research, or planning your next trip.
bullet SMS - send and receive sms messages from the terminal.
bullet Store and Forward Video - be the first to report the latest news.
bullet File Transfer - collaborate your findings with partner Universities.
bullet Digital Image Transfer - send that photo back of you on safari
bullet Instant Remote Access to your corporate LAN - as if you were in the office
bullet E-commerce - selling your produce 'just in time'
bullet Database Queries - get your hands on important information when you need it.
bullet IP Gateway - multi-user access, with full cost control and accounting.

The Essential tool :

Carrying another piece of kit is often the last thing you need whether you're traveling for work or leisure, which is why Regional BGAN has been designed for people who need to travel light.

Regional BGAN is a true plug and play solution which works with either your laptop PC or PDA via USB, Bluetooth or Ethernet interfaces. The set up process is automated so all you have to do is connect your PC via your chosen port, lift the lid of the terminal (which is the antenna), point it in the direction of the satellite and log on; you are then free to work as if you were sitting in your office.
